Obama ‘08: Health Care Negotiations on C-SPAN; Will ‘Shame’ Congress Into Passing My Plan

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle in 2008, then Senator and Presidential Candidate Barack Obama said that he would hold negotiations on a health care bill on C-SPAN so that the choices being made for the bill would be open to public debate.

The discussion would be “right there in front of the American people,” then Senator Obama said. However, the American people still await this C-SPAN telecast.

Mr. Obama also revealed that he would use the tactic of ’shaming’ Congress into passing his health care bill, saying that he “would not underestimate the degree to which shame is a healthy emotion.”

This tactic can be seen at work now by Mr. Obama and the Democrats as they call health care protesters “un-American,” claim they are carrying “swastikas,” make threats to them, assault them, accuse them of being racists, deny them entrance into town halls, dismiss them, and say that they “don’t want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking.”

Also, the recent revelations that Mr. Obama has been holding dozens of secret negotiations with drug companies runs counter to Mr. Obama’s promise of “not negotiating behind close doors,” made during the CNN Democratic debate in January 2008.

This is the ‘Change’ America can believe in?

“I would put my plan forward and I would welcome input, and I would say here are my goals: reduce costs, increase quality, coverage for everybody. If you have better ideas, please present them. But these negotiations will be on C-SPAN, and so the public will be part of the conversation and will see the choices that are being made. So if a member of Congress is carrying water for the drug companies and says, well we can’t negotiate for the cheapest available price on drugs because we need the money for R&D research, we will have a discussion right there in front of the American people about the fact that the drug companies do need profits, but their also spend a whole bunch of it on marketing, television ads where nobody even knows what the drug is for. That builds in accountability into the system because now that congressman is put on the spot, and I would not underestimate the degree to which shame is a healthy emotion and that you could shame Congress into doing the right thing if people know whats going on.”
