Sen. Inhofe: Sotomayor’s Comments Are ‘Racist’; Her Decisions Will Be Influenced By Gender, Ethnicity

Share ThisSENATOR JAMES INHOE (R-OK) ON SENATE FLOOR: “She further stated in 1994 – and this is a presentation in Puerto Rico – that quote
‘Justice O’Connor has often been cited as saying that a wise old man and a wise old woman reach the same conclusion in deciding cases, however I am also not sure that I agree with that statement. Well, I would hope that a wise [Latina] woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion [than a white male who hasn’t lived that life].’
Now that’s pretty emphatic. There is no other way you can interrupt that. She thinks that a woman with her experience can make a better conclusion than a white male – and to me, I consider that racist. Sotomayor has not only suggested the possibility of impartiality, but also that gender and … ethnicity should generate – ethnicity should influence a judge’s decision.”
