By PoliJAM | April 27, 2009

'The Truth' painting by Michael D'Antuono
In celebration of President Obama’s 100th day in office, painter Michael D’Antunono planned on unveiling a messianic portrait of ‘The One’ at Union Square Park in New York City.
However, “due to overwhelming public outrage” D’Antunono has since canceled the unveiling of the painting that has the President of the United States appearing much like Jesus Christ on the Cross.
Below is a portion of a press release issued by representatives of the artist:
Share ThisPainter Michael D’Antuono has cancelled the planned public unveiling of his latest work “The Truth” at NYC’s Union Square Park on President Obama’s 100th day in office due to overwhelming public outrage. The artist’s decision was based in part on thousands of emails and phone calls; online blogs and other public commentary received in the first 48 hours following its release.
The painting which was first made public on Friday depicts President Obama appearing much like Jesus Christ on the Cross; atop his head, a crown of thorns. Behind him, the dark veil being lifted (or lowered) on the Presidential Seal. The photo was the most emailed picture on the web.
The artist insists that the work was intended purely as a political piece. “The religious reference was used metaphorically and not to insult anyone’s religious beliefs. If that is the effect that my art has had on anyone, I am truly sorry,” says D’Antuono.

What do you mean “if anyone was offended” you moron. Metaphorical my aunt Gertie’s garters.
Arms outstretched, crown of thorns, head bowed to his right ? You can’t piss on my boots and make me believe it’s rain.

Thank God The people are praying and finally speaking up !! Is this our wake-up call ? If so ,you had better pick up the phone.

This is so nauseating! Obama is, at best, an empty suit. He’s Jimmy Carter with a tan. When are people going to wake up and realize it?

What did you, the artist of this picture expect out of us Christians? Did you not think that this would be offensive to us? We hear so many times that others are offended by what we do, but it doesn’t seem to matter that the Christian be offended. It’s time we all took a stand for our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, “The (real) Truth”, “The Way”, & “The Life”. May God help this country of the US of A & may God wake up it’s leaders. Be political or not . . . what is right is right & God’s word is the only thing that is right. I, for one, am very appalled at even the suggestion of someone else depicting the Messiah.

I too am absolutely appalled! IT IS INDEED TIME FOR ALL OF GOD’S PEOPLE TO MAKE A STAND AND OUR VOICES HEARD. JESUS DIED FOR OUR SINS, AND EVEN IF THIS WAS MEANT AS A JOKE, IT IS SICK, DISGUSTING AND APPALLING! IT IS OUTRIGHT SACRILEGE!

I must repent, I’m afraid I took the coward’s way out, and used only an initial, but I am NOT ashamed of God, and I want to be counted among those who find this to be appalling!

I have to keep my head out of the sand and stand up for what I believe. I believe our country is on it’s way down if we who are Christians do not stand up for what is right and just. The canceling of this is a step in the right direction. I Praise God that He provailed not the devils agenda.

is this guy for real?! seriously? There is NO WAY a the religious reference was used metaphorically. From the crown of thorns to the way his arms are outstretched, this is sheer blasphemy. Even the title of the piece “the truth” is blasphemy as Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life…” the “artist” even played on it by asking people “whats YOUR truth?” as if there is more than 1 absolute truth (which is Jesus Christ).
If the reference was purely a metaphor, he would have had obama as mohommad with a bloody sword, or King David dancing half naked in front of the Ark of the Covenant, or buddah, or vishnu, etc.
This was a deliberate attempt to undermine the Christian faith, and while I forgive him for my personal offense (as the bible says I should) I am outraged and think that if he has any scruples whatsoever that he will rid himself of this painting by destroying it.
Obama is NOT the messiah that he would have you believe. I wonder what the Obama family believe about this? If he’s a Christian (as he claimed he was before he acknowledged his muslim faith) then he would be as offended as the rest of us.

What scares me is that this type of thing is foretold in Revelation. Are we moving closer to the rapture? I’m leaning toward yes. The bible speaks clearly about the world falling into chaos and the great deceiver coming in showing great intention on the surface and then unleashing the beast and the mark.
Too many people are touting him as a political messiah and not just a man. How long before it goes to his head and he becomes like King Nebuchanezzar

I could maybe believe th emetaphor with a huge stretch of my imagination but when I enlarged the pic from my yahoo page and saw the crown of thorns the metaphor flew out the window. How long will God put up with this before He decides to pour out his judgment on the United States. We need to pray like Abraham of old, “Lord if there be but ten rightoues will save the city?”

I am very sad, Mr. D’Antuono, to see your painting. If, in fact, you did not realize what this particular depiction would bring religiously or politically, I seriously doubtthat you are in touch with human feelings, Christians and others.
If , in fact,as you said, the painting was a reflection of your view of a political cartoon(painting), you have indeed ired alot of people.
In our present political setting, you have created a diversion in which alot of people are as hurt as they are angry. Your painting will”put you on the map”.
In the future, I hope that you will spend your paintings and time serving people positively.

I can’t believe American citizens are willing to tolerate such atrocities. As Christians we have been riduculed and criticized – we have had to be tolerant of terrorists-unbelievers and endure harsh criticism but this painting is appalling. It is time Christians should be heard and not ignored. Time for America t turn back to God.

I am honestly so offended right now, that I am having a hard time putting my feelings into words. I am jumping out of the boat now, as all Christians should and I am not afraid to let my voice be heard. We Christians have stood around being passive long enough. If we can’t take a stand for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, then we should hide our heads in the sand. This is an outrage, I am offended that anyone thinks they can make a picture like this and not think we will be angry. It is an insult to Jesus and I refuse to be silent about it. I hope people boycott this artist and show him he crossed the line with this one. I agree, it is high time for America to turn back to God.

Hahahha….what are people getting offended about?! This is an accurate depiction of how Obama sees himself. It is even MORE accurate in how his followers BLINDLY worship him.
What baffles me is WHY they worship him. Is it BECAUSE he is the most racist biggoted President since the early 1900’s? Or some other reason?
There is a day coming soon when America will finally have to accept that Obama is a racist for NO REASON and has a giant chip on his shoulder. This man is undoing all of the great work of Dr. MLK Jr., and all the ignorant people can do is clap.
