Krauthammer Slams Obama Over Unnecessary Concession to China; ‘You Call The Bluff and They Will Fold’
By PoliJAM | February 10, 2010
It was very bad of China to try to dictate to the U.S. president who he can and cannot meet with as China did in telling President Obama not to meet with the Dalai Lama last year.
However, Dr. Charles Krauthammer said Tuesday, President Obama’s reaction was worse than that of China’s in that the U.S. president acted as a pushover to Beijing by not meeting with the Dalai Lama.
“The Chinese are giving orders all the time, but American presidents ignore them or walk away,” Krauthammer said. In postponing his meeting with the Dalia Lama, President Obama made a “concession that he didn’t have to make.”
“If they order us around, you call the bluff, and you’ll see,” Krauthammer said, “they will fold.”
But on the pushover Obama getting China to agree to anything but the most menial of sanctions, the Fox News political commentator sees no chance. Not that he thinks that sanctions would do much good now anyway.
“The problem is that we are late in the game. Obama has wasted a year plus on negotiations that everybody knew in advance were going nowhere. So I think the day for sanctions is long gone.”
After the president had wasted so much time on fruitless negotiations, Krauthammer sees a change in regime as being our only hope on the Iranian nuclear issue.
